Clear definitions for the ideas used throughout The Echo Principle™ and the wider discussion of AI Visibility, AIVO, AEO, GEO and entity corroboration.

This glossary explains how key terms are used within The Echo Principle™ and ProCited’s approach to AI Visibility, AI Visibility Optimisation (AIVO), Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and entity corroboration. It also defines the four stages of ProCited’s ECHO Action Framework: Establish, Corroborate, Harmonise and Optimise. Some entries are established technical, search or marketing terms; others are ordinary words or phrases given a specific meaning within the framework.

Important: Different industries and platforms may use some of these terms differently. These definitions explain their meaning on this website.

A

AI Assistant

An AI Assistant is a user-facing application that allows people to interact with artificial intelligence using natural-language questions and instructions. ChatGPT and Claude are examples of AI assistants.

Within ProCited’s work, AI assistants matter because people increasingly use them to research, compare and ask questions about businesses, products, services, professionals and places.

AI Confidence

A practical way of describing reduced uncertainty in an AI system’s understanding of an entity. It does not mean that AI “trusts” a business as a person would; it means that the available information forms a clearer, more consistent and better-corroborated pattern.

AI Invisibility

AI Invisibility is a practical term for the broader condition in which a business, brand, product, service, person or other entity has weak or absent visibility in relevant AI-generated answers, comparisons, citations or recommendations.

Within ProCited’s methodology, AI invisibility is the opposite of becoming part of the conversation. It may result from weak entity clarity, insufficient digital evidence, conflicting information, limited off-site corroboration or an absence of relevant signals. Unlike Zero AI Visibility, which describes a specific measured result, AI Invisibility may describe the entity’s broader visibility condition.

AI Optimisation (AIO)

AI Optimisation (AIO) is a broad umbrella term used for work intended to improve how content, businesses and other entities are discovered, interpreted or represented by AI systems.

The terminology is not used consistently across the industry. ProCited uses AIVO when the specific objective is visibility, recognition, corroboration and inclusion in AI-generated answers, and AEO when the focus is optimisation for direct answers produced by answer engines. Because AIO can also be used informally as shorthand for AI Overviews, the full phrase should be stated when precision matters.

AI Overview

An AI Overview is a Google Search feature that uses generative AI to provide a summarised response for some searches and displays supporting links that people can use to explore the topic further.

Within ProCited’s work, AI Overviews are treated as an important AI-search surface where a business may be mentioned, described, cited or linked. Appearing in an AI Overview does not guarantee a website visit, and not every search triggers an AI Overview.

Answer Engine

An Answer Engine is a system that retrieves and interprets information to produce a direct, synthesised answer to a user’s question rather than only returning a list of webpages. AI-powered answer engines may combine information from several sources and present citations or links alongside the response.

Within ProCited’s methodology, an answer engine matters because a business must be understood not only as a webpage that can rank, but as an entity supported by clear on-site information and relevant off-site evidence that can be retrieved and used in an answer.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring and improving content, entity information and supporting evidence so that answer engines can understand, retrieve and potentially use it when responding to relevant questions.

Within ProCited’s methodology, AEO focuses on helping an entity become part of the direct answer. The Echo Principle™ supports this by connecting a clear on-site voice with relevant off-site corroboration. AEO sits within the broader discipline of AI Visibility Optimisation (AIVO), which also considers recognition, consistency and visibility across different AI systems.

AI Visibility

AI Visibility is the ability of a business, person, product, service, place or other entity to be discovered, recognised, understood and potentially included in relevant AI-generated answers.

Within ProCited’s methodology, AI Visibility depends on both the entity’s own on-site voice and the relevant off-site evidence that corroborates it.

AI Visibility Optimisation (AIVO)

AI Visibility Optimisation (AIVO) is the practice of improving the clarity, accessibility, consistency and digital evidence that helps AI systems discover, recognise and understand an entity.

Within ProCited’s methodology, AIVO combines on-site entity clarity with off-site corroboration. ProCited uses The Echo Principle™ and the ECHO Action Framework to explain how the entity’s original voice can be reinforced by relevant, accurate and credible signals across the wider web.

Citation

Within ProCited’s AI Visibility measurement, a Citation occurs when an AI-generated answer identifies or links to a webpage as a source supporting the answer.

A citation is different from a Mention: a business may be mentioned without a source link, or a webpage may be cited without the business being named in the visible answer.

Corroborate

Within ProCited’s ECHO Action Framework, Corroborate is the second stage. It means creating, earning or strengthening relevant and credible third-party evidence through profiles, citations, reviews, articles, interviews, directories, partnerships and other suitable sources.

Corroboration

Corroboration is support for an understanding from additional, relevant sources. It does not require identical wording; it requires compatible evidence that reinforces the same underlying facts.

Digital Evidence

Digital Evidence is information visible online that may help an AI system identify, classify, contextualise, corroborate or understand an entity.

Within ProCited’s approach, digital evidence may be on-site or off-site, first-party or third-party. Examples include official website content, structured data, business profiles, directories, reviews, articles, interviews, partner pages, event pages and professional associations. Its value depends on what it confirms, who publishes it and how clearly it connects to the correct entity.

Digital Signal

A Digital Signal is a piece of online information that may contribute to how an AI system identifies, classifies, connects or understands an entity.

Within ProCited’s approach, a digital signal might confirm an entity’s name, category, location, offering, expertise, relationship, reputation, activity or relevance. Digital signals may be first-party or third-party, strong or weak, consistent or conflicting. A digital signal becomes an echo when it independently reinforces a useful and accurate part of the entity’s story.

Echo

Within The Echo Principle™, an Echo is a credible third-party digital signal that reinforces AI’s understanding of an entity. An echo is defined less by its format than by the useful evidence it contributes.

The ECHO Action Framework

The ECHO Action Framework is ProCited’s four-stage method for applying The Echo Principle™: Establish the entity clearly, Corroborate it with relevant and credible third-party evidence, Harmonise the facts and relationships across sources, and Optimise the quality, relevance and reach of those signals over time.

Echo Consistency

Echo Consistency is alignment in the underlying facts attached to an entity across different sources. The wording and perspective can vary, but core details such as identity, location, category, relationships and offering should not conflict.

Echo Source

An Echo Source is the place where corroborating evidence appears, such as a publication, directory, review platform, podcast, professional profile, association website, partner page or independent publisher.

Echo Type

Echo Type describes the subject or activity being reinforced, such as a product, service, person, event, award, partnership, location, piece of research, review or case study.

The Echo Principle™

The Echo Principle™ is an AI visibility and entity corroboration framework developed by ProCited. It explains the relationship between a business’s first-party voice, the credible third-party echoes surrounding it and the confidence AI systems may form from that combined evidence.

The principle is expressed as Voice → Echoes → Recognition → Confidence → Recommendation.

Entity

An Entity is an identifiable thing that information can be connected to. Within The Echo Principle™, an entity may be a business, founder, professional, product, service, location, brand, development, event or idea.

Entity Corroboration

Entity Corroboration is the reinforcement of AI’s understanding of an identifiable entity through relevant and credible third-party digital signals. It is different from repeating the same claim across many pages.

Within ProCited’s methodology, entity corroboration connects the original first-party voice to the credible third-party echoes surrounding it.

Entity Recognition

Entity Recognition is the ability to identify an entity and correctly connect information, attributes and relationships to it. Recognition comes before confidence and recommendation.

Establish

Within ProCited’s ECHO Action Framework, Establish is the first stage. It means defining the entity clearly: who or what it is, what it does, where it operates, who it serves and what it should be known for. A clear original voice gives other sources something accurate to reinforce.

First-Party Source

A First-Party Source is a source whose information is created or controlled by the entity itself. This includes its official website, product and service pages, company profiles, press materials and business-controlled social media profiles.

A first-party source may be on-site, such as the company website, or off-site, such as a company-controlled LinkedIn profile. Within The Echo Principle™, first-party information establishes and distributes the original voice, but it is not the same as independent corroboration.

Generated Answer

A Generated Answer is the response produced by an AI assistant, answer engine or AI-search feature in response to a prompt or query. It may contain explanations, summaries, links, citations, mentions, comparisons or recommendations.

Generative AI

Generative AI is artificial intelligence that can produce new content in response to an instruction or prompt. The output may include text, images, audio, video, code or other forms of content.

The Echo Principle™ is primarily concerned with generative AI systems that produce answers, explanations, comparisons, citations and recommendations involving identifiable entities.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving the visibility, use, attribution or citation of content in responses produced by generative engines.

Within ProCited’s methodology, GEO is one part of the broader AIVO discipline. GEO focuses on generative answers and citations, while AIVO also considers entity clarity, on-site information and off-site corroboration across the wider AI-discovery environment.

Ghost Citation

Ghost Citation is a term used by Writesonic for a citation relationship that is not fully visible in an AI-generated answer.

ProCited uses the term for two related situations: a webpage is shown or used as a source without the business being named in the visible answer, or information associated with a business appears without a visible attribution link. Ghost citations should be recorded separately from standard Mentions and Citations because the visible attribution is incomplete.

H

Harmonise

Within ProCited’s ECHO Action Framework, Harmonise is the third stage. It means identifying and correcting conflicting information, connecting related entities and aligning the underlying facts while allowing each source to retain its own voice and perspective.

I

Independent Digital Signal

An Independent Digital Signal is online evidence created or published outside the entity’s direct control that reinforces a relevant fact, attribute or relationship connected to that entity.

ProCited evaluates independent signals according to their accuracy, relevance, credibility, context, freshness and connection to the correct entity. An independent signal may become an echo when it meaningfully reinforces AI’s understanding rather than merely mentioning the entity.

K

Knowledge Graph

A Knowledge Graph is a structured representation of entities and the relationships between them. The term helps explain why consistent identities, categories, locations and relationships can matter to machine understanding.

L

Large Language Model (LLM)

A Large Language Model (LLM) is a type of artificial intelligence model trained on large amounts of language data so that it can process and generate text and other language-based outputs.

LLMs help power AI assistants and answer systems, but the model is not the same thing as the company, product or interface through which people use it. Within The Echo Principle™, the term is used when explaining how AI systems may connect information, recognise entities and produce answers.

Mention

Within ProCited’s AI Visibility measurement, a Mention occurs when the name of a business, person, brand, product, service or other entity appears in an AI-generated answer. A mention does not require a citation or source link.

Off-Site AI Visibility

Off-Site AI Visibility refers to the digital evidence, references and relationships that appear outside an entity’s own website and may help AI systems recognise, verify, contextualise or understand that entity.

Within ProCited’s approach, off-site evidence may include business profiles, company-controlled social profiles, directories, reviews, publications, interviews, podcasts, association pages, partner pages, event listings and customer discussions. Not all off-site evidence is third-party, but many of the strongest echoes described by The Echo Principle™ live in independent third-party sources.

On-Site AI Visibility

On-Site AI Visibility refers to work carried out on an entity’s own website to make its identity, offering, relationships, expertise and relevance easier for people, search engines and AI systems to understand.

Within ProCited’s approach, this may include clear entity definitions, useful content, answer-ready pages, consistent facts, internal links, structured data, accessible HTML, service and product information, authorship and location information. On-site work establishes the original voice and gives external sources something clear and accurate to reinforce.

Optimise

Within ProCited’s ECHO Action Framework, Optimise is the fourth stage. It means continually improving the quality, relevance, clarity, accuracy, freshness and reach of the corroborating signals surrounding the entity.

Part of the Conversation

“Part of the Conversation” is a ProCited phrase describing the goal of helping a business, brand, product, service or professional become relevant and recognisable within the AI-generated conversations that matter to its audience.

It does not mean appearing in every AI answer, controlling the entire conversation or being recommended for every question. It means establishing enough clarity, relevance and corroborating evidence for the entity to be considered, mentioned, cited or recommended when appropriate.

Recognition

Recognition is the stage at which an AI system can identify an entity and understand enough about what it is, what it does and where it belongs. In the principle’s sequence, recognition comes before confidence.

Recommendation

Recommendation is the inclusion or suggestion of an entity in response to a relevant user question. The Echo Principle™ can improve the available evidence, but it cannot guarantee that any AI system will cite or recommend a particular entity.

Reinforced Understanding

Reinforced Understanding is a clearer pattern formed when multiple relevant sources contribute compatible evidence about the same entity. It is the opposite of relying on one isolated self-description.

Retrieval

Retrieval is the process of finding relevant information from websites, documents, databases or other sources so that it can be used in an AI-generated answer.

Retrieval matters to The Echo Principle™ because information does not always need to be permanently contained in a model’s training data to influence an answer. Clear, accessible and well-connected digital evidence can make useful information available to retrieve, although retrieval or inclusion cannot be guaranteed.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is a method in which an AI system retrieves relevant information from external sources and supplies it to a language model when generating an answer.

Within ProCited’s work, RAG helps explain why accessible websites, clear entity information and credible external sources may matter to AI-generated answers. It does not mean that every available source will be retrieved, cited or used.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the established practice of improving a website and its content so that it can be crawled, understood and ranked more effectively in traditional search-engine results.

SEO commonly focuses on technical accessibility, page relevance, keywords, links, authority and search-result performance. ProCited treats SEO as an important foundation for discoverability, but distinguishes it from AIVO, which also considers how an entity is recognised, corroborated and included in AI-generated answers across a wider body of digital evidence.

Semantic Consistency

Semantic Consistency is consistency of meaning across different sources, even when the wording, format and perspective differ. The goal is compatible understanding, not duplicated copy.

SEO for AI

SEO for AI is an informal phrase used to describe work intended to improve visibility in AI-generated answers and AI-powered search experiences.

ProCited uses AI Visibility Optimisation (AIVO) as the broader and more precise term because the work extends beyond traditional page ranking to entity recognition, corroboration, mentions, citations, comparisons and recommendations.

Source

Within ProCited’s AI Visibility measurement, a Source is a webpage, document, profile or other retrievable resource displayed by an AI system as supporting material for a generated answer.

The source is the underlying resource; the Citation is the visible reference or link connecting the answer to that source.

Structured Data

Structured Data is machine-readable information added to a webpage to describe entities, attributes and relationships in a more explicit format. Structured data can support clarity, but it does not replace independent corroborating evidence.

T

Third-Party Source

A Third-Party Source is a source outside the entity’s direct control, such as an independent publication, customer review, industry association, partner site, podcast, event organiser or specialist directory.

Within ProCited’s approach, credible third-party sources are important because they can provide independent signals that corroborate what the entity says about itself. These are often where the strongest echoes live. Third-party status alone does not make a source valuable; the information must still be relevant, accurate, current and connected to the correct entity.

Trusted Echo

A Trusted Echo is a useful echo from a relevant and credible source that reinforces a correct understanding of an entity. “Trusted” is practical shorthand for stronger supporting evidence, not a claim that AI systems trust in a human sense.

Voice

Within The Echo Principle™, Voice is what an entity says about itself through the sources it controls, especially its website. The voice establishes the original identity, offering, location, audience and position that other sources may reinforce.

Z

Zero AI Visibility

Zero AI Visibility is a measured result in which a business, person, brand, product, service or website is completely unmentioned and uncited across the defined set of AI-generated answers being tested.

It describes the result of a specific prompt test or measurement period, not a permanent condition.
